Over the past 150 years, Nixa has become one of the fastest growing cities in Missouri and the second largest city in the state of Missouri. I grew up, graduated, worked, raised a family and lived and worked in this "small town" of 1,200 people that my parents called home. In the last 150 years, it has become the third fastest-growing city, behind St. Louis and Kansas City.
Nixa, with a population of 19,339, recorded only 380 crimes in 2012, giving residents an average 2.5 times the chance of being the victim of a crime. Compare that to the similarly sized Poplar Bluff, where there were a total of 1,721 crimes over the same period. It's clear why it's the fastest growing city in our state and the second largest in Missouri.
The population is evenly distributed: 11.4% are 65 years or older, 41.6% had children under 18, 58.3% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a housekeeper with husband and 4.0% have a male housekeeper without wife. Of these, 27.3% did not live in a family, 26.2% lived with children over 18 years of age, 40% had no children of their own, 25.9% were not in families, 14.8% lived with their parents, 56.1% were married couples living together, 10.7% had no children, 6.25% had no children and 12% had no domestic help with a husband and 5.11% lived in households without children.
Individuals account for about 22.8% of households, 8.9% have someone living alone and 65 years or older and 7.6% have a male housekeeper with a husband or domestic help in their household. Some 20.7% of households are living alone when they are 65 years old - or older. Individuals make up about 21.2%, or 2.3 million people, of the total population.
The racial composition of the city is roughly the same as that of St. Louis County, Missouri, with about 2.3 million residents. The racial affiliation of this city is roughly equal to that of the state as a whole, about 1.5 million and about 4.4 million.
The population has grown from 756 in 1922 to 19,339 in 2014, according to the Nixa Chamber of Commerce. The median income of a household in the city is $37,655, and the median income of a household in St. Louis County, Missouri, is about $44,556 per family. More than one-third of NIXA's population, about 1.5 million people, live below the poverty line, including more than half of the poor, or about 2.3 million. A new office is being built and a medical satellite clinic opened to cater for NIXA's growing population. There is a new business model for healthcare and there are amenities that are being introduced.
